About KanjiLab

Send Feedback

This site is to help learners of Japanese become familiar with the readings and meanings of kanji and their related vocabulary. Users who sign in with their Google account can save their progress and access all JLPTN5 to N2 levels.

This site will be most convenient for you to access and view fully on mobile if you ‘Save to your homescreen’.

1) Home

On the Home page you can see your ‘current set progress’, mode settings, and a grid of the 25 kanji to study. Current Set Progress: The colored circles show the current number of words at each rating level (Green is the highest, meaning ‘completed’, down to red which indicates that the item has been mistaken multiple times.)

Item Progress Rating System: all items start at a yellow rating. They get rated up one level if gotten correct without any hints or mistakes, otherwise they are rated down one level. If items are rated green they are considered known and do not appear in the game again. If an item is red, it means it has been gotten wrong several times, so it is presented again in the very next game. Yellow or orange items are presented in random order.

Mode settings: You can set the mode so that you either search for kanji or for hiragana in the game, prompted by a cue of the meaning, the hiragana reading, or both. (When a single cue is selected you can still get to see the other cue as a further ‘hint’, but if so the item will be rated down a level.)

Kanji Grid: You can click an individual kanji in the grid to see its ‘flashcard view’, which shows information about that single kanji (e.g onyomi & kunyomi readings, meaning), as well as a number of vocabulary items containing that kanji.

2) Lists

On the lists page you can select a JLPT level sublist of 25 kanji, to study their related vocabulary in the activities. Next to the List name you can also see the number of completed (i.e. green-rated) items, for the currently selected mode (e.g. Kanji target found from both cues). N.B. The vocabulary listed for a kanji only include words from the current level and below, to ensure that the words are decodable for the user at their current level.

For reference, you can also see the target kanji details and their vocabulary on a flashcard view, linked to from the home page grid or by tapping on a kanji in a vocabulary item listing (on review page or flashcard listing)

3) Account

You can see your account details here, and log out (though this is not necessary, you can still log in on other devices simultaneously).

4) Play

The ‘game’ is simple - from the given cue, spell out the target word in kanji or hiragana, depending on the currently selected mode.

If the player taps a wrong tile, they are shown the correct character in the cue area, which they should then find in the grid. (If a player simply doesn’t know the answer they can tap a random tile to be shown the next target character). In both these cases the target word will be rated down one level (e.g. from yellow to orange).

In single cue modes (i.e. just a ‘meaning’ or ‘kana’/’kanji’ cue), you can tap the ‘Hint’ button to see the other cue - but the item rating will also go down in this case. (the easiest mode therefore is the ‘Both’ cues mode).

After 5 items, the current progress for the current kanji set is shown, along with a review list of just the words from the previous game. The user can click any of the kanji in these words to see its ‘flashcard view’. The colored rating circle can be tapped to rate the word down a level (in case the player feels they should practice this word more).
